In preparation for my batik workshop with the Jean Augustine girls, I created this large Gyname, Adinkra Symbol. Adinkra Symbols are from the Akan people in Ghana. This is one of my favourite symbols because the meanings include "there is nothing except God", "there is nothing but the creation of God" and "he who knows and sees everything". It is a powerful symbol and it reminds me of the first batik workshop I taught to the students of the Africentric school in Toronto. Each student in the grade 6/7 class had the opportunity to create their own Gyname batik, since it was the symbol on their uniform.
This is an abstract print of the original wall hanging.
